Resident Evil: Apocalypse/Extinction += The Difference (Alice/Carlos/Jill, PG, 930w)

Written in a single stint on my mother's borrowed laptop as I staved boredom waiting for the Beijing 2008 Men's 100M Final. A wonderfully kind comment on my other RE fic made me read over that piece and I was aggravated that I hadn't even managed to make the three kiss.

So, this is to make up for it. (Warning: it throws all reason and plausibility to the wind.)

» Title: The Difference
» Fandom: Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Resident Evil: Extinction (Movie!verse)
» Status: Complete
» Warnings: Mild spoilers for both movies, have not read novelisations
» Pairing(s): Alice/Carlos Olivera/Jill Valentine
» Summary: Jill Valentine. Alice has only the slightest idea what the woman is thinking half of the time, but she’s a great shot, she doesn’t need orders and Alice really enjoys the arguments that roll between Jill and Carlos about Jill’s wardrobe.

Alice smoothes Angie’s hair back and kisses her forehead. “G’night, Angie.”

Angie’s smile is small and sleepy. “Goodnight, Alice.”

The door to the caravan she shares with Angie clicks shut as Alice steps into the desert night air. Jill and Carlos are there waiting for her. Jill is shuffling up dust clouds with her boot.

Alice breathes the cool air deep and slumps against the door between her comrades.

“How is she?” Carlos’s hands are in his vest. Alice doesn’t know why he’s the one who is tense.

Jill grunts from where she stands at Alice’s shoulder. “She’s a kid who lost her Dad. How would you be, Carlos?”

Carlos’s hand squeezes Alice’s shoulder and ignores the comment. “We’re glad you’re back.”

Alice finally looks him in the eye. His face is so calm. “I don’t know I’m the best person to be with her right now.”

Jill peers into her face. “Are you feeling all right? Do you want to stay back tomorrow? ”

“No,” she says immediately.

“We’re taking shifts, Alice. She missed you.” Carlos doesn’t smile, but she can hear it in his voice.

“Yeah,” her voice cracks and she feels like there’s something better she should say.

Jill is standing close, her arms crossed. “This is probably the safest place for her.”

“Probably.” Alice feels the burn of Carlos’ hand on her shoulder and the heat of Jill along the other side of her body. She almost smiles. “How are we doing?”

Carlos gestures off-hand at the other caravans and buses of their camp, dark and quiet. “We’re set up for the night. The watches are set. We’ve organised the teams for tomorrow.”

“I didn’t think you’d had the chance to reload so we brought you some mags,” Jill says.

Alice looks at the bundle in Jill’s hand. “I’ve been thinking about knives instead.” Jill stares at her, so she adds, “I think I can use them better than anyone else. We don’t have a lot of opportunities to re-stock our ammunition.”

“... Do you mean... throwing knives?” Carlos sounds the way Jill looks.

“Huh.” Jill presses the spare magazines into Alice’s hand anyway. “I’ll look around for some blades, but keep talking, I want to – Carlos, she has some funny ideas.”

“I will find you more grenades,” Carlos promises her and Alice laughs; a quiet chuckle and she ignores them both. “Forget I said anything, I’ll look myself.” She leans her head back against the caravan.

They smile to themselves in the ensuing quiet, comfortable in the warmth of familiarity, which may be the oddest thing of all because these two haven’t known her for very long. She rolls the spare magazines in her palm and thinks she may know all that she needs to.

“Alice.” Jill’s voice is hot against the shell of her ear.

Alice turns her head and finds them almost nose to nose. Jill’s eyes are stark against the dark of her hair, they quietly intimidate, but now Alice sees only calm. Alice smiles and Jill grins in return, her eyes closing as she leans their foreheads together.

“Say something else,” Jill says and Alice feels the air of her breath whisper against her skin.

Jill Valentine. Alice has only the slightest idea what the woman is thinking half of the time, but she’s a great shot, she doesn’t need orders and Alice really enjoys the arguments that roll between Jill and Carlos about Jill’s wardrobe.

“Thank you for the rounds,” Alice says eventually. Jill hasn’t given her any reason for distrust yet.

“No,” Jill murmurs, voice low, and for a moment Alice has forgotten Carlos is still beside them. “Something like when you talked about Angie.”

Alice jerks back, the sense of wrong slapping her to hear the subject of Angie when Jill is pressing against her like this. A self-conscious part of her fervently hopes the little girl behind the door they’re leaning against has fallen asleep. “I don’t want to talk about Angie.”

Jill blinks at her. “Neither do I.”

Another hand settles behind Alice’s head and she looks at Carlos as he threads his fingers through her hair. “We’ll keep watch with you tonight.”

“... All right.” Alice looks at his mouth as he speaks and even in the dim firelight she thinks he sees. Her eyes slip closed when he steps in, but he kisses her forehead and she frowns. Maybe she had misread.... ?

Then Jill kisses the corner of her mouth. She’s startled, but she only blinks and Jill must take that for assent because then she kisses Alice properly. Alice makes a surprised sort of noise that is muffled between their lips and then she’s melting because Jill is not gentle. It’s too easy to part for Jill and then Jill’s tongue is sliding across the roof of her mouth, tilting her back and Alice moans, dragging her closer.

Jill’s fingers are under her chin, Carlos’s hand in her hair.... She shivers in shock. Carlos!

Alice pulls back from Jill who lets her go easily, a wicked smile curving her lips when Alice glances at Carlos, unsure of his reaction. The heat in his eyes goes straight to her belly where Jill’s hand is sliding, deliciously warm, around her waist. When Carlos moves in this time Alice meets him halfway and their teeth knock briefly, but they recover and Carlos’s tongue swipes across her upper lip as she feels Jill’s mouth on her neck.

Well, she smiles against Carlos’s mouth and her hand moulds to Jill's lower back, this is different.
