Lucifer watches Meg croon over the hellhound, her perfect fingernail trailing down its torn, bleeding snout.

The hellhound snarls and her shoulders shake, something between a garbled snicker and a giggle escaping before she releases its neck and the creature bounds over the morning dewed park towards its prey by the monkey bars.

There’s a sudden, quailing shriek of horror that gets louder and louder before a chorus of panic joins in. Meg laughs with delight, rocking back on her heels with her hands in her pockets before she sets after the hellhound at a stroll.

Lucifer notices how the hair of her vessel glows in the morning sun, the skin around her eyes stretched in mirth. He also sees the true fetid thing that gapes beneath that skin, greyed, twisted and snarling.

Meg, like every demon, is frighteningly ugly.

He reviles them, but they love (no, not love – adore, worship) him so, so well. Demons have been falling over each other for millennia to prove how terrible they’d been, how well they could serve him and even now his heart swells with such amusement that he can’t bring himself to halt their pathetic displays.

Somehow, it's not working today.

Meg looks over her shoulder to check if he’s still watching and Lucifer narrows his eyes at her, sneering on the inside when the demon shrinks on itself and gets back to work.

These demons, these witches and warlocks, banshees, sprites, demigods and all the rest he’s lost track of are a smear on perfect, glossy mornings like these. But Lucifer knows that these mornings are the reason humans wake up with their heads in the clouds, persistent in their ignorance of true evil and their pursuit of it. He's observed their indulgences, their celebrations of personal fault, excess and accomplishments, never realising they’re perpetuating his sins.

Lucifer is waiting for a world where humans wake to a reality that knows and shows them their sins. There will be no more springs, winter or balmy summers: just a long fall of fire, famine, filth and disease... unable to hide from their true selves, maybe more humans would take better pursuits. And if they want to keep celebrating the worse parts of themselves, he's got a place South for that as well.

He won't have to wait long.
