This made me laugh, I find it a compelling argument! This was about choosing your lesser evil and whether you need the truth or the facade to survive, hence the title of the episode, "you can't handle the truth". Their history is too misconstrued by miscommunication and attempts to save each other from the painful facts, so yes, they can't afford to keep secrets anymore. Especially since Sam's lacking basic intuition.
I can't remember the last time I saw these guys take a glass of water or soda. They know how to handle their beer, so although it'd be easy for someone with Dean's reasons to drown in a bottle, I don't think it's going to happen. But it may be easy for someone like Adam to make the mistake of thinking so.
