Raphael is a conundrum to me, his traditional role has been completely ignored in the show, I am shamelessly projecting the sugeestion it was a radical and disturbing change for his brothers to witness as an outcome of the war. They all coped in different ways, Raphael became the perfect soldier, Michael withdrew to command remotely, and Gabriel ran away.
