“Reid,” Caleb’s voice breaks and he runs a thumb along Reid’s jaw, searches the dull blue eyes that only reflect himself, but Reid just watches (as though noting the weather report), unresponsive although he's crushed against Caleb's chest, “Why, why – why would you do this, why the hell would you --?”
Reid lifts his hand and confusion flickers in his face, distant, already fading, “I had a reason,” He wonders aloud, fingers hovering over Caleb’s lips and then his cheek, “I think... I don’t remember.”
But Caleb remembers how Reid’s eyes flashed sharply blue to black when Caleb held Sarah like this, after Reid had approached him for what he said would be his last attempt (please, please, Caleb, I won’t beg, but I don’t think I can – God, it’s just... it’s killing me), and he remembers feeling shame at the spectacle, guilt because he’d already chosen Sarah, and confidence that Reid was overreacting, he would survive this alleged heartbreak; but now his brothers will never forgive him because he was wrong and he can’t believe what Reid sold just to exorcise those feelings.
