Penny levelled the shotgun at the skinny, blond man in the white raincoat.

“Horrible.”

Doctor Horrible sighed, hands raised with his death ray pointed at the laundromat ceiling.

Doctor Horrible, if you would, Bounty Hunter Penny, I'm accredited.”

“It’s just Penny.”

“Penny.”

She gave him a once-over and smiled. “That’s a good uniform on a day like today. I heard there was rain in the forecast.”

The Doctor gave a bark of laughter. “The true supervillain is suited for all occasions, Penny, from interfering vigilantes to plain inconveniences. And it’s machine washable.”

He hadn’t changed a bit, although his hair may have grown an inch or two since she caught up with him three months ago at the Stanford elementary science fair. Espousing real science to the children, he’d apparently been distracted from his dastardly plans. She’d let him go for that one and duked it out with Horrible’s partner instead. He’d taken her for ice cream at the end.

Speaking of….

Penny kept her shotgun trained and glanced about the laundromat. “Where’s your sidekick?”

“He’s not my sidekick, he’s my bodyguard.”

Penny blinked in surprise and drew up short. “I actually thought he was window dressing. You should really get your money back.”

The Doctor rolled his eyes heavenward with an insufferable sigh. “Every day, Money Penny, I try.” He cleared his throat and projected to the laundromat as an Emperor to his coliseum, “But, I have found that once every while, the Hammer proves he’s worth the air he breathes.”

Penny stared, wondering if she was witnessing a confession of love of sufferance, and glanced over her shoulder self-consciously.

The only other patron, a Latina woman in her middle age, hadn’t even glanced up from her knitting catalogue.

The Doctor frowned and raised the volume a notch. “Sometimes, the idiot even comes when he’s summoned!”

Penny yelped when a strong pair of arms scooped around her waist and hoisted her into the air. Glancing back, she saw Hammer’s familiar face pinch as he looked for a place to set her down. He was a much larger man than both she and Doctor Horrible, but despite the ill-placed affection from their last encounter she had to take the opportunity and rammed her elbow into that confused expression.

Hammer dropped her immediately, Penny flailed to keep from falling over backwards, but she regained her footing, swept Hammer’s feet out from under him and swung the shotgun back on Horrible just as he took aim at her. The death ray’s electric whine of coming to life resonated against the clunk of five machines working their dryer cycle.

“Ouch,” Hammer complained from the tiled floor.

The Doctor scowled at him. “You are so on the couch tonight.”

And so, the Doctor and Bounty Hunter began their stalemate with one Hammer strewn between them.
