Faith hears the startled whimper in the shadows when she throws the vampire to the ground, but when she looks towards the dumpster nothing charges out.
She turns back to her subject with a grin of things to come and slams the stake home.
The vampire ash clouds are really starting to show on her jeans.
She brushes herself off when she straightens and looks back towards the source of the earlier sound.
“Hey,” She calls and slaps at a thicker clump of ash on her knee, “If someone’s there you better come out, before I come looking for you.”
There’s a long pause, but Faith hears the shuffle and her patience runs out quickly.
“I said –“
“Please don’t hurt me,” Comes the answer from the shadows beside the dumpster, broken and afraid.
Faith goes completely still because she’s heard that voice before. She’s heard it out of her own mouth more times than she’d like to think about. She narrows her eyes at the shadows and hides the stake behind her hip.
“I won’t hurt you. C’mon out.”
A woman slowly steps into the light and Faith gasps.
“Well I’ll be… damn….”
It’s her face. Her body. It’s her, but trembling and terrified and dirty, twisting the sleeves of her over-large flannel against her stomach.
“This has gotta be a sick joke,” Faith swears. “Who are you? Who made you? Are you a robot?”
The other woman’s lip trembles and it’s like looking into a mirror of herself at her worst times. It makes her nervous.
“I’m Echo. I—I’m not a robot. I don’t think so.”
Echo. That’s completely sick. Still….
“Okay, I’m in rehab, so I’m not allowed to kill first and ask questions later.”
Faith thrusts a hand towards the alley’s opening at the street.
“So, I’m gonna take you to meet a guy I know. We’ll talk and you'll tell me who the hell you really are.”
Echo looks unsure, but she skitters into action when Faith raises her hand again. Whatever this Echo was, she could actually be a real person with rights, feelings and everything. If that was true, Faith wasn’t going to get taken up on a second murder charge.
But she sure as hell wasn’t about to trust her, either.
Angel would figure something out.
