Castiel hasn't felt this presence since Carthage.

It's like the resonant heat of a furnace at his back, a slow and persistent burn. But this isn't a physical sensation. His eyes shut with a soft wince as the sensation flares through the skin, through flesh and his grace recoils.

Castiel's jaw clenches, he palms the skin of his nape and decides he has to look over his shoulder.

His hand stills, horror clenching in his chest when Lucifer tilts his head in greeting, leaning a shoulder against the brick wall of the alley.

He thought he had been careful.

Lucifer is not quite smiling as he looks his brother from head to toe.

"Is your fading grace affecting your perception, Castiel?"

Castiel feels something trickle down his temple. When he brushes it away, his fingers come back shining with moisture, clear and cool. Lucifer watches him patiently, hands in his pockets.

"You see that," Lucifer nods at Castiel's hands.

Castiel rubs the bead of sweat dry between his fingers and narrows his eyes.

"It's a symptom that you're wearing thin -- fast," Lucifer huffs a breath, rolls his eyes, "I know what that's like."

"Why are you following me?" Castiel's voice doesn't travel well in this alley, its dark walls consuming the sound.

Lucifer hums and pushes off the wall. Castiel is careful not to react.

"What reason could I have to pursue someone standing between an angel and his vessel?" Lucifer pauses with a small smile, "That’s sarcasm, if you’re unsure.”

“I’m well accustomed to sarcasm,” Castiel growls as Lucifer stops a hand’s breadth away, hands still in his pockets.

Lucifer nods, pleased.

“Then you’ll know when I’m being genuine: tell me where Sam Winchester is and I’ll leave you with the use of your wings.”

The flare hisses again beneath the surface like a whip with a thousand tongues of fire and Castiel staggers back, eyes wide.

Lucifer smiles gently. On his vessel, the gesture looks kind; it almost looks sad.

“Please, Castiel.”

Castiel looks up at his brother, he hadn’t realised he’d doubled over. He shakes his head, the protest on his lips, but the next sear of heat slashes like a knife and he clutches a hand to his stomach.

“No,” Castiel groans and he’s shaking. He feels the sweat dripping from his brow, he barely has the strength to shake his head, despairing that he’ll crack and burn all the way through. “You won’t take Sam Winchester. I will never betray my friends.”

“Friends,” Lucifer echoes knowingly, reverent. “Sam’s at risk, right now, he’s hunted. When he says ‘yes’ to me, I’ll protect him. And I want you to protect us; as my Lieutenant. Be our friend.”

Castiel grits his teeth when the flare retreats for a moment. He can’t quite straighten, his grace is still raw and aching with ghost impressions of Lucifer’s will. He glares at the devil, sweaty palm still fisted to his stomach and he tries to take flight, swift as thought, but his vessel won’t move.

Castiel grunts, panting at the effort, but Lucifer’s power is as certain as a hand on his shoulder, holding him down.

“Friends don’t do this, Lucifer. You won’t ever understand –“

“Castiel, I want you to listen to me,” Lucifer interrupts, stepping in and he takes Castiel’s face in his hands. His thumbs gently stroke over Castiel’s cheekbones and Castiel feels the burn spark and hiss behind his eyes, all the way down.

His mind is whirling between the contradiction of Lucifer's soft, pleading gaze and the power lashing agony through him. His eyes slide shut almost against his will, but Lucifer only pulls him closer.

“I won’t burn you out; I want you with me. And I don’t expect you to agree yet. I know you won’t give up Sam Winchester now. But I’ll drag you down within a cinder of your grace until you do.”

Lucifer presses their foreheads together and everything goes white.
