Gratuitous gloating post. That's really all this is.

So, about two days ago Transformers was released in Australia, ahead of the American release date of July 4th.

I went along with some friends (and friends of friends) last night to see it, expecting a handful of nice effects, 'splosions and not much else.

I was quite pleasantly surprised.

The trailers cleverly set fans up to prepare for disappointment and I may not have enjoyed it so much if I wasn't expecting trash.

An actual story! Suspence! Self-mocking romance! Bad, *bad* pick-up lines. CARS. OMG TECHNOLOGY. 'SPLOSIONS, AHOY.

The transformation effects for both the Autobots and Decepticons are incredibly smooth and though there are only one or two scenes where the practical is discernible from the animated, you have to be looking pretty hard (or thinking distantly) to notice it.

Mama (i.e. Mary) Winchester lives on as the weepy wife of Sergeant Lennox. Cheater.

"I AM THE MEGATRON." Oho ho ho... YES. Squee squee squee.

Everyone was incredibly shiny, sweaty and dirty throughout the film, which was funny, a little grating (it made Michaela look twice as daft), but believable enough for a HIGH OCTANE ACTION-PACKED "TEN TIMES BETTER THAN ARMAGEDDON" PACKAGE!

I'm not sure what I was doing when Transformers was a cartoon, though I predominantly remember TMNT, Sesame Street and Pretty Ponies, so I relied on a little fan orientation to catch me up on the bots. For instance, I didn't know that the transformers could speak and had distinct personalities... I knew nothing, and though people informed me of this it was something else seeing it in seamess CG animation.

Bumblebee has a merciless sense of humour. (And I actually liked the pre-upgrade Camaro version better!) I was near tears both (yes, both) times that I watched the film and he narrowly avoided pulverisation. BUMBLEBEE HAS NO LEGS. BUMBLEBEE NEEDS NO LEGS.

Jazz is your "brutha" from the 'hood with a lot of attitude and enough kick to make him credible, but he's still dwarfed by the big wigs (for some reason his silver Pontiac fails to allure me and I generally *love* silver.)

Ironhide. Pwns All. Salute! (Someone call Torchwood, they may be missing their SUV.)

Ratchet is like the yellow version of Beast from X-Men -- but with cannons! -- he even sounds the same. He transforms from a... firetruck?

Optimus is a little pink for my tastes, but though he's the poster child for "Evil will always triumph because good is DUMB (and concerned with bystanders)", I've just gotta respect a leader who morphs from semi-trailer. There's some lumbering charm about semi-trailers that, even when they're rusted and their disel fumes obscure my driving vision, endears me. They're so old skool.

The distinction between the Autobots' protecting, serving in sleek European-whenever-possible style and Decepticons militant style was obvious, but I still couldn't figure out what Bonecrusher was supposed to be. A rebel Bobcat?

Starscream (Raptor 42) and Blackout (Black Hawk) were incredibly sleek; that's how a transformer does sexy!

Barricade (Police Car) would be the coolest bully on the playground.

The little crazy stereo that shall go unnamed was like a exo-skeletal Predator on speed ("Mine is an EVIL laugh!"); I approved.

The others fade from memory, though the Decepticons outnumbered the Autobots by a fair few (I guess it's harder to recruit for the side with a conscience), the good guys won the day! Because there's more to them! Than meets the eye!

Action dragged on a bit and the slow-mo Transfomers in ass-whuppin'-action was a must to see half of what was going on. Thankfully, I only noticed this on reflection rather than while sitting through it, my eye was never bored.

So, I really enjoyed it, but [livejournal.com profile] necromage enjoyed it so much she insisted we see it again when we went into the city this afternoon. Now, I'm very tired, but kind of happy I've managed to see it twice before it's even come out in most (or all) of America. Go see it and enjoy.

Hahaha it was! I remember the time we also got X-Men 2 ahead, that was also worth it.

I hope you enjoy the film!

Starscream's actually an F-22, which are 'nicknamed' Raptors - so cool! I wish they were selling them...

I couldn't tell you which stream of F-22 he was, but guessing, probably an F-22A...? It's a bit hard to guess not knowing where he touched down.
