She’s got to be in the roof.

Eliot’s been searching for almost an hour now. It’s not a small apartment; he’s overturned every piece of furniture, looked behind every curtain and even checked the cupboards because he has firsthand knowledge of Parker’s petite and flexible abilities. He’s learned not to underestimate her prowess for the improbable.

Eliot’s been searching for an hour and a half and it’s getting ridiculous because they’ve got a team briefing with Nate in forty-five minutes.

He pulls out his mobile and hits the speed dial for Parker. She’s never learned to put her phone on silent mode, so he’s surprised when he doesn’t even hear an echo of her ring tone throughout the entire apartment.

“Guess who?” Parker giggles as she answers. The phone muffles for a moment, Eliot can hear the muted sneeze that follows and hazards a guess that she’s in the air ducts after all.

Eliot looks up and around the ceiling, half expecting she’ll poke her head down to make faces at him that he couldn’t see in a phone conversation. “Darlin’, where are you? I searched the ducts and as far as I could see, you weren’t there. You remember we’ve got that meeting with Nate at two?”

“Are you giving up?”

Eliot can imagine Parker drumming fingers against her lip in glee, anticipating his forfeit.

“Don’t see that I have much of a choice,” Eliot can’t fight the smile at the answering whoop of triumph, “Now, where are you?”

“I’m in the lobby downstairs, waiting, so we can go and see Nate.”

Eliot smiles and grabs his keys, locking the door behind him. “You were fast, I’ll be right down.”

“No, I was here all along,” Parker concedes with sing-song ease.

Eliot stops in the middle of the hallway. “You were ‘hiding’ in the lobby this whole time?”

“Well, yeah. It was pretty effective, huh? Hiding out in the open.”

Eliot does not appreciate the giggles that follow and storms towards the elevator.

“Parker, when you’re playing hide and seek, you’re supposed to stay in the original vicinity!”

“I did, I’m still in the building! I learned that from you the last time we played and you lost then, too,” Parker’s offense quickly disappears under the pride of her accomplishment.

Eliot sighs and watches the numbers tick down towards the ground floor. “Okay, we’re going to have to go over the rules again.”
