Written for the [livejournal.com profile] sr_slash Wildcard Challenge: DC Smash. Originally I wanted to crossover with Teen Titans, but Batman proved easier to write at two in the morning. I have a feeling I should have 'smashed' some more. Apologies for the rushedness, I was writing a lot of assessment on the side.

» Summary: Lois is having a bad day. Nothing a visit from your grim, caped Gothamite can't exacerbate! (This is not a humour fic.)

How long had they been rolling towards this end?

Lois balanced the cigarette between two fingers, tapped it against the back of one hand and watched the elevator buttons glow and fade as she ascended towards the roof.

When she stepped into Richard's office that morning to relay Perry's errand -- and express her disgust at such an abuse of her interpersonal skills and character -- Richard had slowly looked up at her from a pile of papers on his desk and she stopped. Somewhere in the space it took to cross the distance between her desk and his office, things had settled for Richard.

A cloud had been hanging low overhead since the evening Richard joined her on the pier to search the stars and she realised he'd been watching for Superman, too. He knew she was waiting for that blue streak in the sky and he didn't mind. Lois had scrutinised her fiancé. She neither wanted nor expected Richard to be irrationally jealous, he wasn't that kind of man, but... he didn't mind? Thereafter followed a week wherein Richard was abroad on assignment, she kissed Jason good night, every night, and her only contact with Richard was over the irregular phone call, but she didn't mind.

Lois wondered what she'd been doing the precise moment when things began to change and she realised Richard could live without her. Biting down on her thumbnail, she wondered, had she ever needed him like that?

Lois examined the cigarette in her hand and rolled it between her palms, idly calculating how many remained in the pack within her purse, down in the office where she'd stormed out for a breath of fresh air before Richard could say what they'd both been thinking and reassure her that it was fine. Because if this was it and it was fine... there was no 'fine' for Lois Lane and it should have been gut-wrenching, gratifying, or -- anything, but fine.

How could Richard be so unaffected? In fact, he'd looked at peace.

She'd swept right past Jimmy when he asked for her opinion on the cover page prints, she might have apologised to Clark when she collided with him in her path to evade Jimmy waving said prints about... it was a little early for a cigarette break twenty minutes into the day, but nobody moved to remind her.

So, no more Richard-fiancé (at least that sounded strange). She might still have Richard the friend and Richard the father of Jason who took them on aeroplane flights, and she had no intention of avoiding him as a co-worker, but... How could your picture of tomorrow smash into so many pieces that you couldn't even isolate the fragments? And how could she not have realised when it happened?

Lois lifted her chin and looked at the ceiling expectantly for answers. She still had Jason and maybe....

Maybe there was something wrong about running from the comfort of one man to another, but she knew Superman might be there for her if she wanted him. She reached for the wall when the doors swept open to the roof and cool, moist air filled her lungs. She stumbled towards the gothic fixtures on the far stone wall and cursed her heels that slid on the wet stone.

Oh, God it was over. It was over, unless she went back down right now it was over, but she needed that cigarette and she hadn't brought her lighter with her, damn it! She felt her shoulders shake and wasn't sure if the gurgle at the back of her throat was to laugh or cry, but she really needed to hear the flap of that heavy cape right now or --

There, behind her. Thank God.

Lois turned, sighing in relief and the grateful smile abruptly died on her lips.

The black, caped figure crouched over the gargoyle cornerstone glowered at her and for a moment Lois forgot why she'd escaped to the roof, stiffening under the intensity of that glare. Batm—here? Why? And what reason did he have to look at her that way?

"Are you lost?" She snapped and suppressed the impulse to throw her dictaphone in that scowling face. Instinctively, her hand fumbled around her waist coat in search of it. What kind of headline could she put on this? 'Pulitzer Prize Winner Assaults Gotham's Dark Knight', oh, Perry would love that one.

Misinterpreting her action, Batman raised a hand in placation. "I won't hurt you, Lois Lane."

"... It's a comfort to know." She found her dictaphone and let it record from her pocket as she strode forward, less inclined to get closer to this gloomy figure than her reporter's instinct demanded. "Shouldn't you be in Gotham, Batman?"

"Gotham is covered. I heard an old friend was in town," the man growled and Lois suppressed a wince. A grim smile twisted Batman's scowl and Lois followed his gaze over her shoulder where Superman was alighting on the roof. Her momentary relief was quashed by the seriousness in those blue eyes when they settled on the visitor. Almost as an afterthought, Superman's attention drew to her and some of the intensity left his gaze as he studied her face. Lois subconsciously stuffed the unlit cigarette in her pocket.

"Are you all right, Lois?"

She nodded immediately, glancing at Batman who was now ignoring her. "Of course. I'm fine."

Superman looked satisfied as he crossed the roof and eyed the Bat again. "You look well, Batman."

"I've had better days."

Lois regarded his dour ensemble. "Really?"

Batman ignored her. "This isn't just a social visit. Have you heard news of Nightwing in the area?"

Lois noticed the subtle frown that pinched Superman's brow and when he briefly shook his head, she rushed in. "Nightwing was sighted at the East side last night, Jimmy was going to follow up tonight for some pictures.... What is it?" She didn't understand Superman's look of concern and Batman... well, Batman had only two faces: grim and murderous.

"Well, it's simple. Turn off your recorder, Ms. Lane."

She felt more than saw the look Superman glanced her way and it was for him, more than the Gothamite's pale order, that she complied.

Satisfied, Batman continued. "I'm going to collect him, you keep your people back and we'll be out of your hair by morning. No reporters, no police; no trouble," Batman's proposition sounded like something of a threat, but before Lois could summon a proper response, something occurred to her.

"Why is Nightwing in Metropolis?" Lois glanced at Metropolis' indefatigable Blue-And-Red Protector at her shoulder.

"Nightwing never left Blüdhaven," she heard Batman snarl as he rose from his perch and turned his back on them. Spreading his cape, the material constricted sharply into broad wings, but before he could step from the roof, Superman called him back.

"Batman. Your 'Nightwing'," Superman used the name cautiously, "What name will he respond to?"

Batman released his cape and when he became still, Lois didn't expect him to answer, but then Batman half-turned back to them, the scowl in place again.

"Welcome back." Then Batman stepped off, glided away from the roof of the Daily Planet and was gone.

// END //

So, I took a lot of liberties with this story. I completely dismiss DC timelines and universes and place Superman Returns in the same timeline with the Batman comic!verse wherein the second Robin, Jason Todd, who appropriated Nightwing's look went on a bloody rampage and I brought him to Metropolis for fun. I like to think that Superman is not as territorial as Batman, but then I need to revise my DC edumacation.

Feedback is mana and very appreciated!

ETA :: I just realised that this is the first time I've ever written DC!fic. I feel like I need champagne, and possibly several tutorials.

... Ah. That explains it then - I was confused over continuity. Initially I thought it was an xover with Batman Begins, but then I saw it was comic!Batman. It's interesting which Robin you decided to write.

critic: A few of Sup's speech patterns seemed a bit off, but besides that, cool fic. I spotted the pairings ;D

Well-spotted, I need to put on some tights and practice my superhero voice. Danke!

I like your take on the Lois/Richard relationship - and I'm very proud of myself for knowing that Nightwing was (a) Robin. Go Me!

Nice work :)

Go, you, you got the important facts down! Everything else is trimming.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it, I was a bit worried as I was working from memory of that [gasp] one time I'd seen Superman Returns (as Mage pointed about, Superman's a bit rusty). I research my fics like I research my essays: quickly and with much side support from Wiki. :D

It, it doesn't feel done! I want more! ;_;

Good work making me thirst for more with the DC Smash! We've had a Batman theme going on the past couple of days, [livejournal.com profile] kuwamiko was working on one too!

You do a great job with Lois. =)

I *know*, Lois still has to go speak to Richard, Batman and Superman need to have a moment (that ends up being about Richard) and I want Nightwing to get some screentime. Alas, the challenge said 3 pages and I already cheated with 4. :P

Thanks for reading, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :] It's funny, I had no intention of writing about Lois, but she just stepped in there.

Batman had only two faces: grim and murderous.

HAHAHAHAHA.

You can't write lines this funny and expect me to come up with anything in coherent in response before I go to bed. It's not fair, I tell you, not fair!

Also, I sensed electricity between Batman/Superman, appropriate Y/N?

[lol] Superhero electricity am appropriate. ;D [nudge nudge]

Where is all the Richard/Clark/Bruce action in the world? Have you compiled such a rec list for it?

Glad you enjoyed!

Hehehe. Yes, you make a good point, it is almost always appropriate :D

Huh. You know, the only B/C/R I can think of off the top of my head is the haiku [livejournal.com profile] saavikam77 wrote. There really isn't enough of these three! And, well, the triangle fic [livejournal.com profile] kuwamiko wrote, but she's already said that won't end with all three of them. Damn, I really should just finish mine, and hopefully that will inspire other people to nurture their own bunnies.

I do thoroughly enjoy your writing! ^^ In fact, I'm already plotting ways to get you writing some Brimstone (and more DC, of course) ;)

The world does lack for B/C/R and as usual, you head various revolutions of fandom. :P

Aw, thanks! My whole objective in writing is to entertain or annoy anyway, so I'm always glad to hear people are enjoying my work.

[laughs] Well, would you believe I've determined to read the Bible (NKJV) cover-to-cover as part of my Brimstone research? I always meant to do it properly and now I have added incentive ;]. (I have a notion. Does writing angel fic count as blasphemy? I must really ask the minister.)

As for DC... well, it's gotta be about family. ;D

Hahahaha. I'm all about revolution, baby, especially when it involves hot threesomes and superhero sandwiches ;)

Oh, man. Do tell me if you find anything interesting in there. I wish I had the time to read the Bible; I bet there would be soooo many good plot bunnies in there. And that's one of the best things about the Brimstone fandom--fun with blasphemy! Is it possible to blaspheme the Devil? Somehow I think he would be very offended to see how often he is a woobie!Devil in fic. *g*

FAMILY! Aren't you still brainstorming a big family crossover? ^^
